WHAT NOT TO DO
Fill the silence with a long rambling answer that circles around the fact that you do not know. Interviewers always know. It wastes time and signals low self-awareness.
THE RULE — NEVER BLAME
How you talk about where you have been tells the interviewer everything about how you will talk about them someday. If you leave this company in two years, will you be generous about the experience or will you be someone who always has a reason why nothing was quite right? They are listening for the answer right now, in how you talk about your past.
HOW TO HOLD YOUR GROUND WELL
When an interviewer pushes back on something you have said, the right response is neither to collapse nor to double down defensively. Say: "I understand that perspective, and I think there is merit in it. My experience has led me to a slightly different view, and here is why..." then give your reasoning clearly. Hold the position if you genuinely believe it. Adjust if their pushback reveals something you had not considered.
